What makes this a great fashion photo? Because it is. It’s very strong. It’s all about the textures I think. And it pulls you in and forces you to examine the clothing. It’s not getting lost, even though it’s almost like camouflage. why does this work? It’s everything, if his expression was soft or blank, this would be a failure. If the values of the black were such that he popped out more or less, it would be a failure. If his feet were together - failure. There is intent here. It’s making a very clear and concise statement. This person is ____. Fashion photography is about selling. Doesn’t have to be the clothing it’s pushing. It can just be selling you a lifestyle, an image, a feeling. 

I think this is what I like about fashion photography. It’s this collection of elements (hair, makeup, styling, model, etc.) that are molded and whittled to a sharp point. At least, this is the sort of thing I am attracted to.

I don’t have the answers. I’m just working this out in public.
